We hope you enjoyed Open Studios! Thank you for your visits! Perhaps you’ve gotten inspired to pick up your own paintbrush again! We invite you to our annual “after ARTrails workshop” THIS COMING WEEKEND, November 2 & 3, 9:30am-3:30pm, Pepperwood Preserve, Santa Rosa.
Two painter friends, Marsha Connell and Sally Baker, one known for expressive “painterly” landscapes, one for elegantly rendered still lifes, offer a unique workshop of watercolor exploration. We are the teachers; Pepperwood is our muse. We hope to inspire artist and naturalist in each person!
Participants of diverse backgrounds are welcome. Workshop limited to 20. $195 fee. More info and registration form https://marshaconnell.wordpress.com/
Sally carries this poem in her wallet. We share it with our watercolor students, about a moment painted forever in our souls, a memory saturated with color. We find it hard to read aloud without a tear slipping through. How art can feed the hungry spirit!
It was after dinner.
You were talking to me across the table
about something or other,
a greyhound you had seen that day
or a song you liked,
and I was looking past you
over your bare shoulder
at the three oranges lying
on the kitchen counter
next to the small electric bean grinder,
which was also orange,
and the orange and white cruets for vinegar and oil.
All of which converged
into a random still life,
so fastened together by the hasp of color,
and so fixed behind the animated
foreground of your
talking and smiling,
gesturing and pouring wine
and the camber of your shoulders
that I could feel it being painted within me,
brushed on the wall of my skull
while the tone of your voice
lifted and fell in its flight,
and the three oranges
remained fixed on the counter
the way stars are said
to be fixed in the universe.
Then all the moments of the past
began to line up behind that moment
and all the moments to come
assembled in front of it in a long row,
giving me reason to believe
that this was a moment I had rescued
from the millions that rush out of sight
into a darkness behind the eyes.
Even after I have forgotten what year it is,
my middle name,
and the meaning of money,
I will still carry in my pocket
the small coin of that moment,
minted in the kingdom
that we pace through every day.

GESTURE and STILLNESS:
with Marsha Connell and Sally Baker
November 2 & 3, 2013, 9:30am-3:30pm
Pepperwood Preserve, Santa Rosa, CA
Two painter friends, one known for expressive “painterly” landscapes, one for elegantly rendered still lifes, both passionate about color, offer a unique weekend of watercolor exploration.
Explore skills including: soft-edged wet-in-wet forms, layering marks and shapes, painting seamless transparent washes as meditative practice, and delineating sharply focused objects. Approaches: abstract to realist, spontaneous to methodical.
Your instructors bring many years of painting and classroom experience to guide you—Marsha at Santa Rosa Junior College and Sally at Healdsburg High School, as well as workshops and classes for students and teachers across the country.
The focus is teaching watercolor skills in the context of the special Pepperwood environment. Pepperwood can speak through the artist’s brush and paint, and get inside the painter, through interaction with the landscape and its smaller forms, ie a tabletop landscape or still life. We are the teachers; Pepperwood is our muse. We will be teaching observation, technique and expression, and hope to inspire both artist and naturalist in each person.
Participants of diverse backgrounds are welcome! Class is structured around group exercises and individual pursuits. Beginners will find guidance for basic exploration. Experienced painters will find support to develop technique and expression.
Materials: Use what you already own or consult our list, sent upon registration. Snacks provided. Please bring your lunch.
Sign up early! Workshop limited to 25 participants. Complete registration, including $195 fee, by mail or email to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
